In an idyllic mansion, isolated from the chaos of a fallen civilization, Sarah and Jack have created a new world in which to raise their two children, Alex and Molly. The story opens on a lukewarm afternoon with Sarah and Jack making love in their master bedroom. Meanwhile, in the nearby forest, six-year-old Alex is murdering his little sister Molly. When Molly’s death tears the family apart, Sarah rushes to protect her son from Jack, who is caught in an ethical dilemma; how to find justice for the murder of his daughter by punishing his son in a world where the penal system no longer exists.
